Services: Lead consultancy and Lighting Design
Overview: New lighting for the entrance to the University of Edinburgh Old College and Dome in the Old Town of Edinburgh.
Completed: 2016
NSLD were lead consultants on this project, responsible for designing and specifying lighting within the Statutory A Listed and UNESCO World Heritage site University campus.
The final installation looks clean and simple in both the day and night but is in fact technically complex utilizing a fully dimmable concealed LED lighting system with easy-to-use smart phone controls. Historic gas lanterns are fitted with LED light sources and a new feature pendant was designed to match. An innovative bird control system using gel deterrent was sourced to ensure the ledge up-lighting system remains viable and free from bird fouling. The restored lanterns also function as a resourceful emergency lighting system.
“Old College is the one of the most iconic buildings in our estate. The concept behind the lighting design was to highlight the architectural character of this treasured landmark. The design was developed to enhance the important features and context of the building. Some of the original lanterns were sensitively restored and complemented with the addition of specially manufactured lanterns. When key parts of the archway are illuminated, the light creates the appearance of a Scottish saltire.”
